Why is Self Care Important? It is important to understand that self care does not mean that you are being self indulgent, it simply means taking care of yourself. The World Health Organization defines self care as “the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a health-care provider.” Self care allows you to stay healthy, and gives you the capacity to not only look after yourself, but others as well. Types of Self Care
Self care may be different for everyone, and practiced in different ways that may look different from your definition of self care. Self care is what you want it to be, and here are the types of self care that you can start practicing. Emotional Self Care Emotional self care can include self talk, setting boundaries, saying “no” to things that cause stress, or adopting a morning routine that is unique to you and prioritizies your needs. Physical Self CareThis could mean prioritizing sleep and exercise, or choosing to adopt or stick to a healthy, well balanced diet of eating protein, fruits and vegetables. Spiritual Self CareSpiritual self care can include attending a weekly religious service, spending time in nature, or meditating. You could also try journaling- a great way to check in with yourself.
