Andrea Lee- Clinic Founder and Osteopathic Manual Therapist On July 24th, it is National Self Care Day, and today we are discussing the importance of self care to ensure that you are prioritizing your physical and mental health.
Why is Self Care Important? It is important to understand that self care does not mean that you are being self indulgent, it simply means taking care of yourself. The World Health Organization defines self care as “the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a health-care provider.” Self care allows you to stay healthy, and gives you the capacity to not only look after yourself, but others as well.

Dr. Erin Sherwood- Chiropractor Spring has finally sprung! With the snow melting, it reveals the return of green grass and spring flowers popping through the soil. Most notably, it also reveals the dead fall and leaves that I was not able to rake before the snow hit us last year. Every spring, I see an increase in patient’s coming to the clinic with lower back pain after raking and spring cleaning their garden beds. I too have also been left with an achy back following a long day of raking if I have not taken the proper steps to ensure my entire spine is working and moving optimally. Andrea Lee- Clinic Founder and Osteopathic Manual Therapist & Stacey Kerslake Whether it is work related, or just the stresses of everyday life- trying to balance all that is weighing on your plate, these unrelenting pressures can have you feeling exhausted, lacking energy and even experiencing unexplained physical pain, this is what we call burnout. Did you know that stroke has become the third leading cause of death in Canada, and the second leading cause of death globally? It is also a leading cause of adult disability with over 400,000 people in Canada living with the effects of having had a stroke.
According to a poll commissioned by heart and stroke, less than half of Canadians were aware of their specific risk factors to strokes. Those who were poled recognized poor diet, smoking and lack of exercise as primary contributors to stroke. Only 10% of Canadians recognize high blood pressure as a risk, even though it is one of the most significant risk factors for these conditions. You’re pitching the bottom of the 9th inning, your team is up by 1 run, bases are loaded, one out to go, and you’re literally holding the ball that can be the difference between winning or losing. You throw your first pitch…it’s a ball. Another pitch…another ball.
How do you maintain focus, and perform the skills you have practiced countless times before? Regardless of your opponent or the playing field, how do you bring your A-Game every time you step into your ‘field-of-play’? Understanding sport-psychology is similar to understanding behavioural-psychology. How do we control our thoughts of fear, self-doubt and failure to allow us to achieve our goals? First we must understand where these thoughts are coming from, and why we choose to pay attention to them. If one structure is out of alignment, It can affect all the surrounding structures.
If you have ever been to an advanced yoga class where the instructor launches their class into a series of deep back bends, forward folds and exaggerated spinal twists, you may have found yourself mesmerized by the body’s ability to contort into pretzel- like positions and hold for extended periods of time. The last 17 months may have been extremely trying, but there have also been positives. Many learned a better work life balance or found comfort working from home. Although you may be excited to be back in the office, socializing with your colleagues, it is important to maintain what was gained, and our wellness team at Natural Alignments, can help.
How can we improve our work life balance now that we’re no longer working from home? There are 3 main areas of focus to create our perfect work environment: your physical desk set up to reduce the strain of working from a desk setting boundaries to improve your mental health, and nutrition for long sustained energy. Oh what a year this has been. As Natural Alignments officially launched this past Sept 2020, Mississauga’s mayor Bonnie Crombie presented this wellness clinic and yoga studio with a congratulatory letter, red ribbon cutting and memorable speech! She spoke on the importance of taking care of our bodies both physically as well as psychologically. She also commented on the quality of service, aesthetic of the clinic/yoga studio and state-of-the-art equipment that we have available for our patients. Emphasis was placed on the fact that we are in the midst of a global pandemic and paying attention to our overall health is of the utmost importance.
Right after our grand opening Ontario continued a series of lockdowns in an effort to minimize the spread of COVID-19. This shut down most of our clinic until we were able to reopen in July 2021. We did our best to hold on over the past 10 months and through practicing patience and dedication we made it! This Sept 2021 we are preparing to re-launch our wellness clinic and yoga studio! We will be launching the yoga studio with complimentary yoga classes, discounts for initial appointments -if applicable, and complimentary one of one info sessions with our therapists! If you are part of the Mississauga Gateway community please join us in October for our breakfast/ information days! Dates TBD!
